If you throw it all on the ground there is going to be a awful lot of waste and a lot more contamination with droppings. Get a chick feeder for their starter and get a small, heavy bowl or dish for the grit. You can mix the grit with the food but sometimes that results in a lot more sorting and billing out of food from the feeder. I just offer it in a dish and let them take what they need.
