What exactly IS Broody/broodiness?

Broodiness is what occurs monthly at the little yellow house in Colorado when my Buff Orp and my Australorpe try their darnedest to hatch chicks from golf balls. They're as regular as the full moon.

I just leave the cage hanging in the coop.

Well, it won't go bad. The egg could lay there for days before the hen gets as many as she feel like hatching, then she'll sit on them all and the first one, if laid on April 1 was left there and the last one was laid on April 9, they all hatch at the same time. Crazy, ain't it?

that is really wierd! im amazed by all of this, very interesting! if i leave it there to see if she goes back to sit on it, and she doesnt, how long do i have until its been too long for me to eat?

Get a silkie chicken and you will find out....hey I am in Madison too perhaps you can come see one of mine one day.
