Hello,

I purchased hatching eggs from 2 breeders. One I know breeds for quality birds and she watches genetics. The other I had read good reviews about but when I got my eggs I started questioning. Now I hatched them and it seems the chicks have inconsistent down. I thought a white spot on the head was a true sign of males.

My chicks have a white spot plus a distinct darker colour on most of them. I'm not sure if I should be happy or disappointed lol! Here are a few pics..I'll get more tomorrow. First one is good breeder chicks. Easy to see one of each IMO.

Second picture is two that have white spot on their head but they also have very dark down...

Yeah, those two on the right are confusing, and I don't think they've been bred to maintain autosexing. The head spots can happen with male and female chicks. Any barred chick can get it. But these chicks have messy stripes and lots of gray down, which is more suspicious to me. I think they are probably cockerels but hopefully a breeder of Legbars will visit and give more information.

Here are some better pictures including the face of the 2 in question. Only one I think COULD be a girl.
