What Gender is this Marans?

Agreed, I've never seen a small Marans. My Marans hen is 8 pounds, and the largest hen I have - at least until the Jersey Giant's grow out.

And the roosters that were at the place I got her from I swear were the biggest chickens I've ever seen.

That is definitely a hen. I have a 4 month old rooster whose comb has been huge for 2 months and has 50 % orange neck and hackle feathers. The pullets stay mostly black. My roo crowed at 5 weeks, too.

Can you get a picture using a flash? Particularly a close-up of the neck/hackles and possible saddle feathers?
If I had to guess, I'd say it looks a lot like a cockerel, but I've had a few marans and I was still guessing until they started crowing, to be honest - need more practice. :p

i don't believe this chicken is 5 months old, it just appear to be that mature. and if it is a maran it should be at the very least a standard sized bird. it appears to have too many feathers on its leg for a maran. its feet also look feathered like some bantams.

She looks like a dark girl, maybe just a black marans. She is looking smallish. Mine are just 3-3 1/2 mths old and bigger than her.

2 roos for comparison

My roos were obvious at 2 weeks. Now there is no doubt I have too many! The pullets only have color in their hackles the roos can have it all over. The boys combs and waddles are HUGE now and the girls are just pink and small. The roos have no tails really, even at 3 1/2 mths. The girls all have nice tails

95% sure you have a pullet. Her age is another story. I think they have bantam marans but I have never seen one. They start huge and just get bigger!!!!

thank you
and i contacted the person i got her from and he swears she is 5 months old and that she is not a bantam
but he got her from some one else as a chick, maybe she is just a runt ?

It looks just like my Black Copper Maran pullet, (around 3 1/2 months)...her brother developed a huge comb and wattle around 1 1/2 months, and was almost double her in size...sooo... I think you have a pullet!
