What goes good with Silkie Chickens?

I want to add onto my flock. Right now I have 5 silkie chickens. I just want to know what would go good with my silkie chickens. I am going to buy them more in the spring time. Also could anyone point me to some good places to buy chickens? I don't really want to buy from Tractor Supply, because they don't really take good care of their animals. I got really sick chicks from them before. I do like the idea of a mixed flock though, but I don't want to endanger any of my chickens.

I have one d'uccle with four silkies, they get along well together. The d'Uccle is around the middle of the pecking order. She doesn't really boss them around, and they don't mess with her much. In a flock with LF and silkies, however, she was at the bottom, even below the silkies.

Well.. I have an extreme mixed flock and my silkies are all towards the top of the pecking order. They are hardy little buggers and can hold their own. I have 3 silkies (one is a roo), a d'uccle, a polish roo, a langshan, cream legbar, RIR, California white, brown leghorn, Wyandotte, ameraucana, a few polish mix chicks and 2 black Swedish mix ducks.

We have a large flock(we will be overwintering about 70-80 birds) that includes EEs, Orpingtons-both English and American, silkies, Wyandottes oegbs, brahmas, cream legbars, buckeyes, mixes, a sebright, a Delaware, some Dominiques. We also have a variety of other breeds and mixes too.

They all do well with the silkies. I would say the important thing is introducing them to the silkies asap as chicks would be ideal under controlled circumstances of course like the look don't touch method. I would warn about getting large fowl roosters with tiny silkies it can be hard to watch a big boy breed a tiny hen. We do keep large fowl roos with our flock but we have many hens for them to choose from. That being said I do have one black English Orpington roo that's in love with a silkie hen.

With your flock being smaller I would recommend not keeping a large roo with your silkies say over 6 lbs or so.

I did have a d'uccle cockeral that we loved but we unfortunately lost him. Cochins can also be good. Basically any breed that is calm and gentle can work with them.

Cackle hatchery is great our local farm and fleet orders from them and we have always been very pleased. I will say though that I have a friend and their farm and fleet has fallen quite short on chick days because they didn't keep the orders separate and gave the wrong chicks to the wrong people. It mostly depends on your location I believe.

I have also heard good things about mypetchicken and they sex bantams. A npip breeder is always a good route too assuming you can find someone who raises what you want.

Regardless of where you get them quarantine for 4 weeks. Of course that is the opposite of what I told you to do with the silkies getting to know them but your flock's health is more important and 4-5 week old chicks are not usually going to judge or pick on the silkies.
