What happened here??

When debeaked the cut is so shallow that it will stop the growth. The break you see on this chick is low enough that the primary soft tissues that are full of blood inside the beak are still intact and growth will continue.

Debeaking is done to compensate for the overcrowding stress of commercial operations. It keeps the birds from pecking each other to death. It makes it very difficult for a bird to range and feed normally and virtually impossible for them to groom their feathers normally. So for the average chicken it can cause a lot of long term problems.
 
Wow, I have learned alot in this thread for sure. I have wondered why some are debeaked. Now I know, and it is a little sad.

She is doing so much better, I may let her out with the others tomorrow since I will be home and can keep an eye on what is going on. Thanks all of you. Maybe I can get some update pics if anything new has developed.
