Well we have not been having the best of luck with our chickens this winter. This is a first for us. A few months back we lost a chicken to what we suspect was a weasel, based upon what parts we eaten. This chicken was attacked and killed inside our electric fence (6 wire, 5 hots). The beginning of january we had an injured chicken, Not sure what happened to her, but under her wing the skin was pulled apart from her muscle. The cut was a 1/2 circle shape and was so deep, i could stick my finger all the way down her body. 2 weeks after her injury on Jan 24 I am missing a chicken for bed check. No body was ever found nor feather trail. Today i was putting up my goats and found a feather puff outside my fence line and then quickly found her body under the barn, inside the fence line. When i pulled her out to bury her there was no blood, no cuts, nothing?! Her original attack happened under trees so i am fairly sure that it was not another bird. I did not really feel around her body to see if she had gotten crushed (was not in a great mood and really did not want to be playing with a dead chicken in the snow!) So i have not ruled that out as a possibility.

Any ideas? I am really getting frustrated. I dont want to pen my birds up, i like the fact that they have free roam on the property. My husband bought some weasle traps (have not yet set them out).

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your losses. I live in the wilderness of Alaska. I have lynx, fox, ermine, martin, eagles, owls, hawks, bears...................... and have never suffered a loss. Guess I'm lucky. Since i also have sled dogs, I can't free-range, would love to, but up here it's better I don't. I have 6' chain link around my coops, chicken wire around the bottom of the fencing, pounded into the ground with stakes every foot. I also have a cover of fishing net up over the top, nothing can get in, KNOCK ON WOOD!!

This is a pic of my "resident" fox. We've got a deal, he stays away from my chickens and I'll feed him daily, this was taken from inside my cabin, he gets into the hen house, he'll be on my wall or on my head..............

I'm kinda thinking it was a weasel and maybe it was making off with the chicken and one of your dogs? you do have dogs? got it???????????
Best of luck to you.................. Nancy

Fox looks to me as if he wants you to go away for a short while. Foxes are excellent climbers. Could he have climbed over the gate? Might be a good thing to add a 24" run of hardware cloth mesh all around perimeter at base of chain-link. Include gate and overlap some way to keep out weasels, rats, snakes, etc.
