Most hatcheries that ship have a 10 or 15 chicken limit because they keep each other warm during shipping. If you only want 4 I would find somebody with either full grown or adolescent chickens. Also 2 extra chickens is not a big deal to take care of you could get 6 and sell 2 when they grow up.

I too will be looking to get only 3 chicks, probably in the spring. Starting to research now and would love to know what you find out. I'm nervous of having them shipped, but not sure how else to get sexed chicks here in SF East Bay area.

Many states have no 'pet' chicken laws mandating that if they are sold a retail they have to be sold in quantity to avoid single chicks from being sold at Easter and then neglected as unwanted when they grow...

Your best bet is to find someone to go in on a purchase and then just take your few chicks... Shouldn't be that hard if you are friendly with a few of the other customers at the feed store on the chick days...

Some brokers like Mypetchicken will sell smal quantities but the shipping defeats any savings over a local purchase...

thank you for all the help! i think i am going to buy 6 chickens and just give the 2 to my neighbors who also raise chickens. thank you!

I agree to buy 6 and see how it goes. Chicks are prone to up and die for no apparent reason. Sexed pullets aren't 100% accurate. Brood them out to 6ish weeks, make sure they're all healthy and hens, then decide who stays and who goes.
