What Hatching Eggs Should I Get?

Let me be the first to recommend against a cassowary... :p

Seriously though, a lot depends on your setup. Are you urban, suburban, rural? How much land? Climate? How much do you want to spend? (Housing that cassowary (who is, incidentally, for sale) could set you back a bit... Plus there’s the cost of security to protect you...

Do you want pets or livestock? What are your goals? Companionship? Eggs? Meat? Exotic display animals? TBH, if it were me, I’d try to find some relatively inexpensive, easy-to-hatch eggs to see whether my novice broody has what it takes. She’s a Silkie, but she’s also new and untried. I wouldn’t want to start her on an egg that’s almost as big as she is. :lau And twenty times as expensive.

I guess I’d read up on any bird I thought I might want to make sure it was even a viable candidate. For example I thought I wanted guineas but after much reading (here mostly), I decided they were not for me, at least not just now. They’re really noisy and wild, hard to keep at home, bully the other birds and apparently are always looking around for novel ways to kill themselves. Some people, though, can’t imagine life without them.

How about those Seramas? They’re cool and a little exotic. You could also consider seabrights. What about some of the other exotic oriental breeds? There are so many fascinating chicken breeds out there that I’m sure you could go your whole life without ever coming to an end of them. Then you can start on ducks...

Or you might want to consider turkeys. Turkeys can make amazing pets, so folks say. I have some heritage ones coming in a couple weeks. I already have four meat ones and am being careful not to fall in love though they’re just naturally sweet. Turkey eggs are only about 1.5x the size of chicken eggs so your Silkie should be able to handle several of them. You can find amazingly beautiful turkeys if you look.

Seramas are definitely a small cute and awesome breed. I love how they stand!:clap
Maybe you could get some cross breeds from a personal breeder, for some pretty hens, I know I have lots of crossbreeds and they turned out to be beautiful!
Like this one, her name is Daisy:

She’s gorgeous :love and that sounds like a good idea too! I have a couple silkie/Polish crosses and they always look so unique! I never have any clue how they will turn out!

I vote Mille Fleur D'Uccle chicks if you want all of them to be bantams, or lavender Orpingtons if you are willing to have a mixed flock, because I think the lavender orps would be a really pretty backdrop for the rest of your chickens. Plus they are friendly so they aren't likely to bully the silkies.

I'd try porcelain or jap bantams or my face pekin eggs
These breeds are all unique and have very friendly personalities except the jap they can be a bit more skittish
Those both sounds great! I do like chickens that are more on the friendly and docile side! The Japanese bantams look a lot like the Seramas also, other than color :)

I will definitely look into those! I think I’ve even seen some hatching eggs for sale around where I live recently. I’ve also always loved the look of the lavender orpingtons. I’m not too picky about them all mixing, I just like to have pretty unique birds that I can enjoy :)

Wait, who said anything about a cassowary :gig
Seabrights sounds like another good breed! I’m not sure if she could sit on too many turkey eggs so I may just have to keep to smaller eggs for her this time!

Oh and to also, add again, you could get some ayam cemani eggs, hatch them and then if you get a rooster, you could make some money off of selling their eggs.
But if you were going to do that, I would get other breeds as well. Good luck!

Oh and, I love Easter eggers, their colors of feathers and eggs is what I LOVE!
