Curious in your experience what breed gave you the most eggs

My leg bar Easter egger, but my healthiest bird is my other Easter egger, she lays small off white colored eggs

My brown leghorns were my most productive layers. I had an RIR once but I don't remember how much she laid. I'm sure it was a lot lol. Also my Golden Sexlink was an egg machine

EEs for me, however I deliberately don't choose breeds that are productive (average to poor is what I aim for, I simply don't want to eat that many eggs).

My White Leghorn would give me 6-7 big white eggs a week. Every morning when I'd go in the coop, no matter how early, my Leghorn would be in the #1 nest box and would already have an egg under her most of the time.

My RIR and BR lay like a boss. I have a few pearl stars that do well too. They were a mixup but they are doing well.

I had a black sex link who never seemed to miss a day ever. Would go months straight laying every day. She was a pet. Great with my kids. A stray dog got her unfortunately.

So far my California Whites have been the egg champions.

But my Blue Australorps aren't far behind.

Any high production breed, developed for laying eggs. So, several noted above: RIR, Leghorn, black sexlink


We have “Golden Buff Cross” high production layers. They have been laying champs for us. We got them for egg production spring 2022. We ordered more for this spring. Otherwise, we have a mixed flock of heritage or dual purpose breeds, and even the pullets slow way down in the fall/winter. Since my kid is active in 4H, we have this mixed flock for the fair season and for eye candy (lots of different breeds and appearances)

So, for lots of eggs, you need a breed that is meant for that. Leghorns are at the top of that list bc they are lean egg laying machines -great feed to egg ratio. But, leghorns are more skittish/ less “cuddly” than many other breeds. We had an exhibition line of dark brown Leghorns….they were bred to be show birds and they were beautiful!!! But, terrible for egg laying bc they were not selected for egg laying (by the breeder), they were selected for adherence to the APA breed standards. But, the hatcheries will select for egg laying traits over breed standards, so just don’t buy an exhibition line like we did .
