I volunteered to teach a few kids (2-5 yrs. old) about chickens. They will be handling them (and washing hands immediately, there will be at least 4 adults for like 3 kids, plus the chickens are vaccinated, etc.), but what should I teach them that would keep their interest? I'm thinking just safety around chickens (washing hands, etc.), and how to hold a chicken. Also, the thing is tomorrow. So I added a poll. :3 Thanks.

Edit- and if you have any other suggestions, please let me know!

I imagine if you start talking at a basic level about feeding and how you house yours, they will be full of questions.

How long will they be there? Can they collect eggs? Could you go through your routine of what you do every morning and have them follow along?

You might include something about respect for animals. Children sometimes play with them as if they were toys. That's not specific to chickens, of course, but a general lesson that some children could learn.

Good luck with the lessons. A great idea!

Thanks :3 Oh and I should mention. The chickens aren't laying yet. They're 14 weeks old and Ella is 11. So far we have: A picnic table (away from the coop) with strawberries, lemonade, and hard boiled eggs (my mom insists on eggs for the chicken theme), a little craft (gluing feathers to a chicken picture), and of course the gazebo where the chickens will be, and the coop. I'm gonna spread a little straw in the run so we can re-clean it. And then we'll go through the morning routine. Thankfully these kids have a lot of respect for eachother and animals. I will still go over that though :3
