What have you done for your chickens today?

Well, I have quail but I'll play anyway...

I fed them & watered them. Turned their lights on and off.

Oh, wait, you mean fun stuff? Nothing. I'm afraid it's one of my busiest days of the week. Those days they just get the basics.

Now, the bunny got more attn but he's still adjusting here...

Hey Moabite, I have been meaning to ask you a question for awhile. Do you know a fine fellow by the name of Josh Frederick who also lives in Moab and is a professional ATV racer? Here he is with my grandson at the awards banquet last month. My grandson is a seven time National Champion too. Josh's team, Can Am hauls my grandson's quads and equipment around when needed. He hopes to race professionally for Can-Am in a few years. He's only 11 now but the only youth racer sponsored by Fox Racing.

Just curious, as I have driven through that area and it seems like given the population you should know everyone! Maybe not, I doubt Josh has chickens!

I just fixed their coop in a snowstorm while 25 MPH winds blew the snow sideways in my face

We got a severe cold snap today so this evening I went outside to check on the girls and make sure they're all ok. I walked in the coop to find that the wind was so strong it was blowing the snow right into the ventilation strips at the top of my coop. I thought it'd be fine because the eaves hang over but I was wrong... Half of my girls who were roosting had a dusting of snow all over their backs, poor babies

I went out to the garage and found a strip of wood to screw over the openings as a temporary fix though so I think they should be fine at least through tonight.

I also had to break the ice in their waterers... I might have to find a heated waterer for this weather. It rarely gets this cold so I'm finding that I was definitely unprepared.

No snow yet, so I got busy. Sifted the sand in the run, got some goodies for the compost. The girls took a dust bath in moist warm sand in the sun. I attached two elbows to a 4.5" black PVC pipe that was about 4ft long to make a J tube feeder. Works better then the galvanized metal one and is much easier to fill I might add. I'll use the galvanized feeder for the Layena, and the J tube for scratch and Manna. Only two eggs today, probably the same hens as yesterday. Still didn't replace the chicken wire yet.

Finally got all the stray leaves rounded up and the put the garden to bed for the year. About a foot of mulch covering the whole thing. My entire yard is clean at the same time, amazing! Storm coming down from the Pacific NW should be hear after midnight. Hope it isn't as bad as what you experienced Jetgirl. I admit, I'm kinda exited for snow though.

Warden, Josh's dad (?) looks familiar, but I asked my kids if they new Josh and they didn't. I'll probably bump into him now that I'm looking.

Thanks for the complement 3chimama. Glad you like my coop. With all of the magnificent coops on BYC, I was a little nervous posting pics, but I try to be humble.

Moabite, the little guy is my grandson Buddy Williams. Definitely call me if you see him in Utah, because he is only 11 and lives in Palm Springs. Josh is the other gentleman in the photo. He is a very well known ATV racer and one of the kindest souls I have ever met. I know he lives in Moab and has a big practice track there. Anyway, I was just curious.

I gave mine warm water in their feed. You would have thought that was the best thing they had ever eaten. Gave them some scratch before bed they went to bed with hugh crops. I think that will keep them warm tonight. We got cold last night but not as cold as some of y'all down to 30. Suppose to be colder tonight. This is my first winter with chickens but they seem to enjoy being outside when its cold.Me on the other hand not so much. Guess I'll have to get used to it.

Warden, now that I understand that Josh is the taller fellow, I'm sure I've met him. Not sure where though. I got Motorcycles in my blood too, but now days I 'm riding the pavement.

I was hoping to go see family up in Orem, and maybe stop off at http://www.utahtrikes.com/ and test ride a few of their recumbent trikes. They look like they'd be a lot of fun. But with winter weather arriving precisely on time (always right around Thanksgiving) I think I'll hole up and prepare to do a feast right here at home. My chickens are so happy that they aren't turkeys.

Howling gnarly winds all night, but this morning just a little more than a gentle skiff in the Moab valley. The birds where delighted by their first snow.

I didn't kick 'em in the feathery bums for being such lazy layers lately.

...

Just kidding (in the sense that that would be doing something FOR them, not in the sense that I would have actually kicked them! ). I didn't do anything special today, but tomorrow they get Thanksgiving treats.
