What heartworm preventative do you use?

I like Iverheart better than HeartGuard because it has prazi in it too. That's a plus for the big dogs who are out and about with livestock everyday. An added bonus is that Iverhart is cheaper.

Interceptor for heartworms here. We have to give it year round in our part of the country.

I think my dog has heartworms! I cannot afford to take her to the vet.

I really wish I could!!! Is there anything I can give her from home??? Vet really is not an option right now! Maybe in a couple of months if she is still around I can. but now is not possible at all!

I remember in the 90s when I was around my first dogs we didn't even talk of heartworm preventatives. Our shepherd mix was diagnosed with them 6 years ago and told he would not survive treatment and would be gone that year. This month they got the best of him and he was euthanized. Heartworms is a horrible way to die, the suffering is intense. I hated watching him cough and such. We will definitley be getting and keeping all the dogs on it. Willow is my heart and I don't think I could watch her like we did Champ.


As for fleas, we tried treating the yard but the neighbors backyard breed their pit mutt dogs and have about 15-20 dogs that are right on our property line covered with fleas. We can't keep our yard good becasue when we spray, they just come back from over there.

I dunno. Charlie was diagnosed with heartworms on her first visit to the vet after I got her; she was around 10-11 months old at the time. I couldn't afford to have her treated at the time; actually I could, but my tightwad ex didn't believe in spending a bunch of money on animals.
Fast forward ten years and Charlie was still going strong. To see her run was like watching a greyhound run. The heartworms didn't slow her down a bit. At my insistence, my vet even retested her. The vet had told me that some dogs would throw off a heartworm infestation years later but no, she still tested positive. I could now afford to get her treated, but the vet said she was too old.

Other than her cough sometimes, you couldn't tell she wasn't the picture of health.

Champ was like that for the longest time, but when weather changed it was hard on him. I think he just got the bad end of it. I still don't want to go through that again. (as she is chewing on my pillow case

Interceptor & Frontline Plus for us. We also do the Lyme vaccine as we are in one of the highest Lyme areas in the country and live in the woods.

I use liquid Ivomec orally. 1/10 of a cc per 10 lbs... but my vet said that was too much and only to use a fraction of that, I wasn't sure what to do so I use 1/2 cc for my 100+ lb dogs. This should never been used on Collie breeds though.
