I think if you are only looking for a few I think you need to do the "pet" card as well.
I only have 4 ladies, in a just big enough coop. And as some of you have said remember chix are work. they have to have attention two times a day.
That said I love my ladies. I picked them for personality, north country heartiness and laying. I have a Barred Plymouth rock and buff brahama, that have laid all winter in an insulated only, heated water, no extra light coop. They free range most days in Cold Montana, so they divert lots of feed for warmth. I think they are the best.
They are social and friendly. I have a Welsummer who molted in Nov and hasn't laid since. My big winter move a Chanticler has not laid an egg yet.
