What Homesteading book do you recommend?

I third the suggestion for Carla Emery's book. I've had mine for about 13 years now and I love it! I also recommend "Backyard Homestead" and "Backyard Guide to Raising Farm Animals" both by Storey.

My favorite homesteading book is: The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery ISBN: 1-57061-377-X

There are plenty of things that it doesn't cover in enough detail, but it's a great place to start. I guess if she covered everything in one book I wouldn't be able to lift it when she was done. But really, it's a great book and even the recipes are pretty tasty.

I agree with all the book recommendations above. I have them and many more. Also talk to the people in your community who garden/farm/homestead, the old timers know a lot.

I sell the "Western North Carolina Farm and Garden Calendar" which is a 240 page book for survival gardening and farming in most eastern states. It is good for USDA Hardiness Zones 5, 6 and 7. I wrote it because I believe we have some very tough economic times ahead. Growing your own food saves you money and is good for your health.

My partner and I are into our third year of homesteading off the grid. We aren't religious but we consider Country Wisdom and Know-How to be our so called bible. This book is incredibly informative with easily applicable instructions on just about anything you could imagine needing whilst living self-sufficient.The front cover reads in bold letters EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO LIVE OFF THE LAND.....I believe this type of statement says it all!!!

'The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It' by John Seymour and 'The Practical Homestead' by Paul Heiney (his original that we checked out of the library 20,000 times because we couldn't find it for less than $300 is called 'A Country Life'). The Practical Homestead is almost as thorough with a lot of the same pictures and diagrams.

I love this book, it really does have a little bit of everything. information on raising and slaughtering livestock, bees, gardening, canning, recipes, building plans for barns, coops, fences, smokehouses, wells, you name it!
