What...I’ve got chickens?

So, our daughter has had RIR chickens for a year or so, and she had a few that were getting “picked on” by some of the others, and she asked if we would board a couple of hens and a young cock. So, we said sure. We have a border collie and thought that it might give her something to herd and interact with. After a brief orientation and introduction of chicken to dog, they got along excellently and now share the same 20’ x 50’ exterior pen.

It’s been 4 weeks, and the hens have started laying regularly, the cock stays busy keeping his girls moving around the pen and “guarding” them, and Chili Belle (the BC) doesn’t pay them much attention at all. I’m already planning a dedicated run area, and expanding our flock. Guess I’ve caught the bug...LOL

I was doing some research on feathers returning, and if I needed to treat the red area where the plucking occurred, when I found several helpful comments and suggestions in the BYC forums. Since I feel the temporary boarding has resulted in a permanent residency, I decided to join the group that gave me the most helpful information on a variety of topics.

Looking forward to sharing our experiences and learning from each of you.
