What in the world are these guys??

Yeah, I think they are large fowl silkies. Maybe they have some blue coloration in their heritage as well.

I actually find them very attractive, especially the gray one (hen?).

I know, I cant figure it out either, and usually I am pretty good at this! I could have swore I saw one time on a hatchery site I saw a rare std breed that looked similar to a silkie, but I cant remember where or when. I have spent a few hours cruising the sites with no luck.

I could have been dreaming, but if I wasn’t someone on here will know, I am sure of it. But for now, I am thinking they are probably just silkie mutts?

I was told mine was pure silkie (here) just very poorly bred - if these are all really poor silkies, but large then makbe someone could start using them to fix the type and get bigger birds-

How much do yours weigh?

Do they have standard silkie temperment?

How are the spurs (my boys spurs are pitiful)

If it would help I could get more picts of Bennie when he's not freeranging -

They are big, way to big for my two silkie hens; not for sure but I bet around 6lbs. They hang out with my Lt Braham hen, who is big, and they are almost as big as her. And yes they are sweet as can be with people...loved to be held, you can walk right up to them, & they will follow you around, but they were inside all winter being socialized. As far as spurs, they are still just little nubs, but they are only 8 or 9 months old?

mines older then, he started getting some hard feathers after his molt (tail and wings only), his spurs are crooked but he's likely 5-6 lbs... so your boys are a bit bigger- do you have a way to weigh them?

Mines almost as large as my dual purpose hens.

I'm sure both yours are roos too-

hahaha! I know they are ugly! My kids wanted silkies, but I have grown kinda found of them now!

I was just funnin ya.

I know! I was laughing; allot! Really my youngest boy wanted the silkies, so I went along with it because I figured I could brood em. Truth be told, I think they are a bit freaky myself, but they are a conversation piece.

My 6 year old, same one who wanted the silkies, now wants a Sapain Jungle Fowl Rooster. He is a nut, and I am unsure where this one came from. We allready have OEG, and he has an x-tra friendly Ro for a pet, and I think he thinks with a Sapain, he'll get a 3 foot tall pet. It would be something to see! But, I think I am going to stay firm with my no on this one.

I really don’t have reliable scales, but they are atleast 6 lbs and they are pretty tall. The same, about as big as a dual purpose hen. They are atleast twice as tall and twice as heavy as my bantam silkie hen.

Yeah, that would be great if someone could use them for a breeding project, they are both real sweet boys. I just don’t know enough about the breed to tackle this project myself. I only got the silkies in the first place because my boy wanted them and they were a good deal. We first got a trio, and he enjoyed them all summer, but I didn’t know how fragile the breed was. We had them in the chicken barn (a mini barn with pens in it lol) with our Seramas, and last fall we had alot of rain & it got pretty cold one night and we lost two of them. So I bought these two chicks to make up for letting his two silkies pass. But because of this we had three silkies in our house all winter; he wouldn’t hear of keeping them out even with lights on them.

Now, we have 3 large breed Ro's all we need are a few hens. lol

I am not all that far from Cinn (about 45 mins west of the Greensburg exit off of 74), but I am Cinn pretty frequently with work. If you want them, they are yours. They are brothers, but they cant be kept together anymore. Ever since their hormones kicked in, they wont stop fighting each other. I cant even have them in hutches were they can see each other, and they still spend all day trying to out crow each other. The good news is, you wont have any problems out of them volunteering to the project. lol The funny thing is, they have a great temperament with people. They are really very sweet. They were handled nearly every day for the past 6 months.

I even let them go the other day hoping they would quickly find a pecking order, but they were too evenly matched and they were not going to quit. They were acting like my OEG, (except allot easier to break up) so now they are in separate hutches, and since I don’t have an xtra run for them, they only get let out one at a time. But with my schedule, this is only a few times per week.

This is the main reason I want to re home them, I feel sorry for the guys because they don’t have much of a life right now. I already have my hands full with my OEG and I am working on reestablishing a Serama Flock and std cochin project myself .
