What in the world is my rooster doing?

My rooster Rascal does the strangest thing:
Occasionally he'll look into an egg box and starts frantically clucking to himself as he picks up bits of the shavings and drops them. Then he sits in the box like a hen laying an egg. Does he want to know what it's like to be a mother hen or is he preforming some sort of chicken ritual?

He's showing the girls that it's a safe place to put their eggs.

My boy used to go in after my hen laid an egg sometimes before. Maybe he's making sure it's a suitable place for his girls to lay? Or he does actually want to lay an egg.
One of a roo's jobs is to find suitable nests he is simply checking that spot out for them.
