I'm not quite certain what you mean about lack of information on waterfowl behavior I posted about Paul's book, that is over 300 pages of waterfowl behavior. I do a JSTOR search on waterfowl behavior and get 7285 papers on waterfowl behavior.

You can also look at Frank's paper:

McKinney, F. 1965. The comfort movements of the Anatinae. Behaviour, Vol. 25: 120-220.

Between those 2, you'll have all the displays known. You might also want to look at:

Delacour, J, and E. Mayr. 1945. The Family Anatidae. Wilson Bulletin, Vol. 57:3-55.

They give an overview of the family and associations between behaviors of the different groups.

I wouldn't consider any of those difficult to read. They're descriptive papers as opposed to hypothesis testing. No stats, just description.

I'm sure those papers are very interesting. Are they available free online or do you have to have a subscription or order back copies of the issues? Would they be available in a public library, maybe on microfiche?

You know what would be cool, is if someone could take those articles, plus other research, combined with lots of real live experience, and put it together in a cool little manual for the duck owner, something like, "Speaking Duck for Dummies" (except I hate the "Dummies" titles because, well, just because I don't know about C++ doesn't mean I'm a dummy, you know?). Because while the information may be out there, not everyone has the time or interest to track it down and synthesize it. Speceider, since you know where to find the info, and there's obviously interest--maybe you'd like to write the The Duck Lover's Speaking Duck Manual. I bet it'll be a best seller here.
