What is a fair barter for processing birds?

Until you have spent a day processing 25+ birds without help you can't even begin to realize the work involved. From dispatch to freezer ready - doing the work all by hand like we did the first time without the aid of a plucker - I would NEVER tackle that job for someone else for less than half. The first time we did a set of birds by the time I had them clean and in bags for the freezer I was so bone tired and the stench in your nostrils - it is a major job. Honestly, a processor who charges $3 a bird has alot of equipment at his disposal that is an entirely different playing feild.

Yeah, I'll totally go with a processor if I can find one, but still don't mind bartering for half. I don't *need* 25 and wuld end up giving some away to family/friends, anyway. The friend that was going to do it for me, I was actually going to go along and help him. I'd kind of like to just because I want to learn, plus I'd feel better (in an odd way, I guess) about eating them. Just can't do it here at the house.

If I just want them skinless, they won't have to pluck them, right? Do processors even offer that option? (Skinless)

call some of your local butcher shops and ask if they or if they know anyone that processes birds..they should be able to help you..we did our own but I think next year I am going to bring them all in,I found a plant that does it for 1.50 a bird 5 lbs and under, add 25 cents/pound over 5 lbs and 50 cents/bird for bagging, but I dont need to have them bag them and save the 50 cents.it is 60 miles one way but if I bring in like 50 birds at once..I think well worth it..

IT seems like a lot to me. Not a horribly large overpayment, but a lot.

The person who showed me is a nice guy who has birds himself on a very mini farm. Maybe you can find a farmer who will show you how to do it and let you and your friend work at his place. Also, 25 birds may be a big job, but who says they all have to be processed at the same time? Maybe you can break it up into 2 or 3 days.
