There may be a specific two breeds most often used which is called 'gold'. If so it will be based upon the sex linked genes gold & silver.
A gold sex link is a cross where the male is a genetic a gold & the females is a genetic silver the columbian gene usually is present. Something like RIR male on a Light Sussex female or New Hampshire on a Rhode Island white....that sort of cross.

I believe they are made with a RIR rooster over White Rock hens with the silver factor.
