What is a good "beginner" chicken breed

Get a buff orpington! They are good layers, great moms, low maintenance, friendly, not to mention beautiful and fluffy! Here's one of mine:

Yay, a rare like minded person on the chicken bb.

If you just want them as pets (not going to eat them) consider a trio of American game chickens. Two hens won't overburden you with eggs and nothing in chickendom is as pretty as a game rooster.

On the other hand, the chicken cuddlers seem to like Silkies.

I have Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, Aurecanas and Buff Orpingtons. So far, the Barred Rocks and Australorps are the most amenable to being held. The aurecanas seem to be the smartest. I chose all my girls based on a lot of research on breeds that were friendly and gentle and also laid well. I understand that the Barred Rocks really prefer to be free range and have noted that they are the boldest about exploring new domains. I expected the Buff Orpingtons to be the sweetest of the bunch but they aren't nearly as friendly as the others! All my girls are still young and I am handling them daily. They all eat from my hand now and tI hope one day they will like being held rather than just tolerating it.
Good luck!

Aren't silkies high maintenance? What if someone poops on them from above or something? They are cute and all but....

Who has buff orpington bantams and sells started birds? Same question regarding cochins.

I think I kinda am leaning toward fluffy but not rabbit looking.

Do you think I can just skip the rooster?
