Hello,

I was just surfing Craigslist and saw that someone had Nankin chickens for sale... WHAT is a Nankin chicken? I've never heard of it! I looked it up in the breeds area, but it wasn't there...

Any and all info would be appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Hmmm.... Ok! Thanks! I looked them up on the Henderson's Chicken Chart, and they weren't there either! IDK... Mighty be worth looking into! They are a pretty little thing though, aren't they!

They are great little birds. Ive had mine a couple years now and will always keep some. They are nice birds for youth, their calm disposition and showy personality make them excellent showmanship birds. The hens will sit anything, super broody!

people will sometimes take old english game bantams that are black tailed buff and pass them off as nankins...or not even know which they have

HI we have nankins and my son shows them they are as quiet as silkies and very personable. If you pick up a magazine that has a heritage chicken article in it they are always in there as they are very close to being extinct...i wont tolerate a nasty breed as i have too many children come to visit and they play with the chickens...i think maybe sonoran you met up with a old english because nankins are never nasty to humans ...we will always have them along with our silkies and ameraucanas...Chris

No, not Old English. Two different kids who had nankins at different times. One got rid of his because of their nasty personality. The other really liked his birds sweet personality. Definitely the same breed. Possibly different lines, which can have different temperaments.

Case in point: First buff silkies had males who were rather aggressive towards other birds--far more so than I had ever before seen in a silkie--silly boys were even mean to the girls, would scarf down food and never call for the ladies to come find the choicest pieces, or would chase them away from the food bowls. I asked about the personality of buffs and received many comments that others found them the least aggressive of their silkie varieties. So, go figure
