What is an EE?

EE = Easter Egger chicken.

These are considered "mutts" by most people, as they are a combination of Araucanas or Ameraucanas and other breeds. EEs generally have muffs and beards and tails and lay eggs that are green, blue, pink, lavender, or brown (hence the Easter Egger name). EEs are what you get from large hatcheries or feed stores that generally call them "ameraucanas" or "araucanas." They are improperly labeled.

Ameraucanas and Araucanas are quite rare purebred birds that you must get from a breeder. Araucanas are tailless and tufted and lay blue eggs only. Ameraucanas are bearded and muffed and tailed and lay green eggs.

p.s. many people LOVE EEs. Other people think they are worthless mutts. I have six of them myself and I think they are great. Hardy, friendly, many different colors of feathers, and they lay many colors of eggs - what's not to like?

True Ameraucanas lay blue eggs. That is what the American Standard of Perfection for poultry calls for...
