What is "animal protein"??

Our dry cat food is little round balls, like small gravel. Some people like to supplement with a little cat food, some people don't. Some people go with a little gamebird or grower feed, during a molt, to add more protein. Some people don't. I feel like I'm not being helpful here.

What about the nonedible parts of meat like tendons or other such things, all ground up? I would imagine hunters (deer season's coming!), fish shops and butchers have plenty of scrap. I don't really understand why feeding meat is bad but "animal protein" and "meat meal" in commercial food is good.

I don't think the issue is feeding meat is bad, the issue is OP wanted a source of animal protein to feed her chickens. I believe some poultry feed does have animal protein in it but OP wanted additional source. I know that animal by-products provide the largest source of animal protein in most feeds. With the rise in problems associated with the practice of feeding animal by-products to commercial production animals (which has been linked to things like mad-cow disease) I believe it is banned for use in cattle (ruminants) feed but don't know about poultry feed. They also banned the use of poultry bedding in ruminant feed (yes they used poultry bedding in cattle feed) which leads me to believe it is legal to feed poultry animal by-products. For some they want to supplement their feed with more animal protein and so they are supplementing their feeding with bugs, worms, cooked eggs, fish, meal-worms, even maggots and animal carcasas. I would also venture to guess cat and dog food would also provide adequate supplement.
