I was wondering what is better to use in the nest boxes. Straw or Shavings ? I can also get saw dust/shavings from a local mill? Any in put would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carol

Pine shavings are the best bedding IMO.

Straw tends to mat and get yucky much quicker. I think it smells more when it gets yucky also.

Do not use saw dust. It's too small and can do harm to your chickens.

Will, that is a really cool set-up!
I also use pine shavings. I still have one hen that prefers to lay in my compost bin. I manage to keep her eggs clean by putting straw in the corner she likes.

Pine shavings....straw can harbor all kinds of bugs and lice...saw dust is too dusty for their respiratory system....
