what is broody like

broody 1.jpg

See how this hen has pulled her head and neck right down into her body, puffed up her feathers, is holding her wings slightly away from her body and has 'puddled' herself into a low, flat, pile of fluff? THAT'S a broody hen. As you approach, she will not run off, like a hen normally would, she'll inflate herself even more, possibly screech at you....a long, low screech, not a cluck, refuse you access to her eggs. Her comb will often be pale and it's not uncommon for her to get a dirty rear end due to the fact that she is only doing one huge, smelly poop per day and it often messes her up.
