What is considered "Free Ranging"?

We will have a 10x16 predator protected run and then 5 foot fenced in 1/4 acre to do supervised free range. Our neighbor has had hawks take out too many of their chickens that it makes me too nervous to do actual free range. We spend most of our time outside which keeps the hawks away....my kids are loud and obnoxious 🤣 once the chickens are old enough to be out and about, hopefully my loud obnoxious children will continue keep the wild birds at bay.

The way I see it, the terminology is not as important as the life they have. Compared to the comercial layers, any of our backyard chickens live in chicken paradise. The latest term is "cage free", but those birds still only get about the amount of square footage as an 8x14" sheet of paper, 116 square inches according to the CA "Cage Free law" https://retaillawbclp.com/californi...aces-supreme-court-challenge-by-other-states/ in a building housing 100,000 chickens. Any chicken owned by a person caring enough about them to be here on this site has a far better life!
