What is considered OLD for a rooster?

Hi All,

This is the first time I have kept backyard chickens. I was wondering, in your experience what is old for a rooster?

I ask because I have a 5 year old BO. He is no longer mounting the hens but still crows and ambles around the yard.

Lately his legs seem to be giving him some trouble. There is no sign of illness or injury, so I was just wondering if maybe he is just getting old.

I have no idea what is considered old for a rooster, so I thought I would just get some opinions.

Answer is breed dependent. Five years is old for many ornamentals and heritage breeds. Games age better. Production breeds burn hot and fast.

I have Buff Orphingtons. they are rather large birds I guess.

I think 5 is pretty old for a large breed like Orps. I had a Chentecler that lived to be 8 or 9. His remaining hen died a year or so after him.
I went out to the coop one day and they were just gone. No warning, just died in the night I guess.

Ok, thanks. I was not sure how long they lived. Mine are 5 years old this summer. So I guess they are getting up there.
