what is DE?

I have seen where people have talked about DE? What is it and what is it good for? Thanks in advance!

http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html Will explain it all. DE is Diatomaceous Earth and you must use food grade around birds, not pool filter grade.

Diatomaceous earth. It's a drying agent that is good for using in chicken bedding for moisture control and it also prevents bug infestation of lice, mites etc.... It is basically crushed fossilized shells. It is recommended to use the food grade DE as the pool DE is poisonous. You can also feed very small amounts of the food grade DE to your chickens and it will worm them as well as prevent flies accumulating in the chicken droppings when it is sprinkled on it.
