What is everyone feeding their new chicks

Yeah, I started mine on the Manna Pro medicated feed for two weeks.

I wish TSC had the Manna Pro in the 50lb bags, but they don't.

So now they're on Dumor chick starter.

I wanted organic chicken so I found an organic farm nearby that sells his own feed. I get 50# bags for $17 each. It is finely ground, not crumbles. No medication. This is my first flock and they are 3 weeks old now. I also feed my chicks alot of treats. Whatever organic vegetable scraps I have, my own homemade organic yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, meal worms, quinoa and oatmeal. I had hoped to free range them but it is still too cold here in Michigan so my tractor is in the garage. They will probably be ready for the freezer before they can get outside much.

The chick starter is all they need for the 8 weeks.

However, if you want to give them a little treat now and then, they WILL need grit (chick grit NOT parakeet/canary grit).

I am curious, why not parakeet grit? I am unable to find chick grit unless I drive to a feed store about 2 gallons of gas away and gave mine some parakeet grit. They've had some access to real dirt but other than that, it's been parakeet grit which looks like little more than fine sand.

Most parakeet grit has added calcium which is not good for growing chicks.

Oops, I'd better check the box then!

Medicated feed crumbles whether I raise them or mamahen does), crush some up further with a mortar & pestle, toss in a chunk of grass with roots/dirt still on it, drop in a little fine sand...

One of these jumps in my hand to get the finely crushed crumble, and scratches like she's a big girl to get the "good stuff" down bewteen my fingers. So cute!
