What is fair compensation?

I always appriciate some of the chicks. Even though I go into it knowing they aren't mine, I still fall in love with them.

If he is doing it just to be nice then I think making him a home cooked goodie is a great idea. You could always offer him some chicks or make him something. I am incubating some chicks for a girl at work right now. I offered, she didn't ask. I don't expect anything in return and I am sure he doesnt either. He may be having fun just watching them grow & hatch. I know I am!

A thank you is always nice. We make maple syrup annually and I used for special thank yous. Maybe there is something special you can do for that person or homemade yummies. Around my community homemade doesn't exist any more. Maybe a special bag of coffee or tea. I'm sure as you spend time chatting about the eggs you will find something that is meaningful as a gift.

clean out his coop for him or turn his compost pile for him, or offer to feed his animals for him when he goes out of town

If he said free then that may be the way he wants it. I would personally be insulted if i offered to do a buddy a favor and was offered payment. I say be a pal and buy him a little gift, or a thankyou card.

I'd offer up a chick or two if he wants them. Or help him w/ some chores, that's always nice. My personal rule is to keep money out of it whenever possible.

If I offer to add someones eggs to my hatch, I expect nothing. If I advertise for bator space it is $1 per egg - especially now since the electric rates are skyrocketing.

It's only 8 chicks, so a cash hatch fee would be small, and to offer a couple of dollars after he has offered to do it for free is an insult.

If you cook, bake him a cake, a pie, or some chocolate chip cookies. If you can, take him a jar of jam.

Show him your joy when you receive the chicks and that will make his day.
