So, my newer hens came to me as pullets and they had not been in a coop or roost before. Due to that, they were laying in their poop and accumulating it on their back feathers. At first, I was bathing them but it wasn't helping. We also were trying to teach them to sleep on a roost. We are almost successful with all of them now. Two weeks ago, I started to cut away they feathers on their back side instead and that is a better method. This hen is very inflamed and we thought it was due to the amount of dried poop pulling on her skin. She also is very bulbous back there. Since we have cut her feathers, she is better in the clean department, but the inflammation, red skin and the bulbous area isn't seeming to get better. I just bathed her again and put Vet RX on her skin and a little Vaseline. Otherwise, she is laying, eating and drinking normally and seems fine. Does anyone know if there is another possibility about what is happening and what I may be able to do to help her heal?
The bulbous area feels like a water balloon. Nothing hard in it that may indicate a stuck egg. I don't know what to do? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
