What is it with Vets and Birds???

here is what I posted... I thought all the lovely people at BYC might find it funny or at least make one say "ZING!" in their heads....

"Perhaps everyone should keep in mind that if one person has an account at one chicken site, they have accounts at others... My name may not be the same, but I've been a member reading here a long time...

I believe that we should all agree to disagree... That is the only way to prevent flaming and ranting and rule breaking. Everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as it doesn't break the rules. Getting facts straight is a good thing.

For those who give their pets ducks everything and keep them happy and healthy, good for you. For those who treat their ducks like livestock and care for them on their own, good for you. For those who cull an animal that is sick or needs to be butchered... good for you... No matter how you do it, as long as you keep your animals happy and healthy....

Shame on anyone who harms or neglects the animals in their care...

I don't just make items for indoor ducks.... I create and invent valuable medical products for poultry and other birds, ones even meant for outdoor poultry, exhibition poultry, and even wild endangered birds... I have a good memory and don't forget such mean thoughts and cheap shots easily. Keep in mind what mean things you say, as you could be reported for flaming and rule breaking.... or when your animal needs something that only I have the patent for and can provide....."


Sorry to go off topic again Tia... I just thought you might like to read that..... I have told you about the Preparation H idea right? For those who haven't heard about it, I recently heard you can but the infamous butt cream on recovering bumblefoot to help get it to callous nicely and prevent further infections... lol

Wow! This thread has covered a lot of ground. Okay, my thoughts (as if anyone is asking for them, LOL)....

On the issue of Bumble foot... NO person that has bred waterfowl for 30 years has NEVER had a case of Bumble foot. Sorry, I ain't buying it. Especially someone that raises birds on wire. That is just a silly thing to say. If anyone believes that, I have an ocean front property for sale in AZ. I have a huge amount of respect for the person that claimed that, but I don't believe it, although, I see people here day in and day out that think a bird has Bumble foot and it clearly doesn't. That is a different issue.

Okay, on the issue of indoor ducks, I really have no opinion. I could not care less. I would hope that everyone treats their animals with care and respect whether they be livestock or pets. As far as the duck booties in particular, I actually think those might be quite ingenious. To anyone here that hasn't seen it yet (including those of you lurking, LOL), I highly recommend seeing the film "Temple Grandin" about obviously, Temple Grandin. It is an amazing film about someone that truly revolutionized animal science and I have to say I see some strong similarities here, not with keeping indoor ducks per se, but with the invention of the duck shoes in particular.

That is fine with me Nettie if you are off topic. I like what you had to say. That is one thing that I appreciate on here, is there are people with different beliefs, but they are in most cases polite and understanding of others and helpful. As a person new to ducks I appreciate all the help people have offered me. I have learned so much. It is too bad that some people are not kind to their fellow man/women.

My angel duck had surgery Tuesday and is recovering. I have to flush her wound and give her oral antibiotics twice a day and she has been the best patient I have ever taken care of. I would not be able to keep her foot clean if it wasn't for your shoes Nettie. I also appreciate the other information that you offered in your message. I am using the Prep. H on her other foot to toughen it up.

I sent you a message about the number of pairs of shoes I would like to order. What a great assortment of colors.

I have just come up with a new plan to help keep my duck pen a little drier. I cut out part of one side of a rubbermaid bin about half way up and put foam like pipe insulation on the edges so they wouldn't be sharp. I put the lid on top. I will put two plastic buckets of water inside and hopefully I won't have so much trouble keeping things dry. Each thing I try is a little bit better. (not sure there is a 100% dry solution with ducks) : ).

The vet that does our livestock dont know the diff between a duck and a goose. I thought I was going to pee my pants laughing, then I find out that he really didnt, then I got scared, he was giving the horses their shots that day. I made sure he didnt get the horses and the goats mixed up......................

Oh, know, that is awful about that vet! LOL, funny too though I have to say. One of the vets that I used to work for said something to me though once that really made me think. When you become an MD, you only have to know all there is to know about one species. When you become a DVM, you are expected to learn all there is to know about dozens of different species. That is really something to think about. I think most vets are like anyone else, they have certain animals they have more interest in than others. Obviously, the ones they work with more, they are going to know more about.

That is right. They mostly work on dogs and cats here. The vet that operated on Angel will work with birds a little bit, but her husband won't. He will work on lizards though. There are very few ducks in this area. I only know one other person that has them.

The irony in the complaints about Nettie and I is astounding: People want us investigated by that certain animal rights group for abusing ducks while they raise ducks for meat and eggs and refuse vet care because ducks it is not cost effective. To those of you that want me investigated, do you even know what that group's beliefs include? I'll give you a clue - they're all vegetarians or vegans.

I'm more than happy to calmly and rationally discuss the pros and cons of keeping ducks indoors (in a separate thread as we are totally off-topic now). I'm very aware of the limitations imposed on the ducks by keeping them indoors, but there are many benefits. However, I will not respond to close-minded behavior full of double standards, baseless assumptions, and personal attacks.

Trenary Ducks, abuse? Seriously?!?!?! My ducks would love to be "abused" like nettie's and joe's ducks!

Sled dogs wear shoes to protect their feet from ice and snow damage. Dogs with bladder issues wear diapers. I had a friend with a terrier that had "pads" for when she was in heat...and this was in the 70's. My friends taco bell dog has several sweaters. Ming Mei's initial case of bumblefoot was well documented, and very easy to understand. It was the concrete. They walked over it to get to the park.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to own acreage. My 5 ducks are happy in healthy in their back yard pen. They swim in a kiddie pool, get daily treats and are spoiled too. I have to desire to keep them inside, but why should I care if someone else does? All I can say in "Buh-Bye!"​

Hey! I'm a vegetarian and even I think these people sound wacked! lol (Don't lump all veg. in with those weirdos!)

Those people on the other site sound crazy, and it sounds like they are a small group of strange people egging each other on in thier nonsence.

BTW, I have taken birds to the vet. I take them to the vet if I have the money, and it's something beyond my ability to fix, and if afterwards I think they will have a normal life. Reasons: First, I have a lot of rare poultry, it would be a pain and set me back pretty far (sometimes years) if I have to try to get new stock. Second, many of my birds are older, so providing vet care goes along with providing retirement for the oldsters. Third, I like having definitive guidance from a vet when I encounter a problem that requires his expertise. (We have a major avian vet clinic nearby, lots of bird experience.) Lastly, I seldom have health problems for any of my birds, so vet visits are few and far between.

I am interested in duck shoes! Where can I see them? (I might want some for my first aid kit - keeping feet clean is a challenge, and you never know when you might need shoes)
