We have racoons here and the occasional fox, and think the chickens are safe. There have been no signs of digging, etc. Yesterday I discovered a dead animal on the road. It is somewhat decomposed so I haven't been able to identify it, but it has thick brown fur, is a little smaller than a full grown racoon, and has long toes. I'm concerned we have a predator here which we are not prepared for. We are on the outskirts of Eugene, OR. Anyone have a clue?

I looked in my mammal book and the best guess so far is a marten. Anyone have experience with this?

Possibly a badger. Sometimes the hair can change color when decomposing.....
