What is killing my chicks??

I have a strange thing going on in my coop. Last week I introduced my 4 week old chicks to the flock in de the coop. That went quite OK.

Last Sunday I found 3 dead chicks, one of them was beheaded. The head itself was missing. Part of one of them was eaten. Three other chicks were missing completely.

I buried the three chick in a hole in the coop. I didn’t find any place where a predator could enter the coop. It’s closed on all sides and there is a net as a roof.

The only holes in the ground I saw where rat nests. Although mosts rats are gone/killed there are some left. I blamed them for attacking the chicks because nothing else could have come in the coop.

The next day I found a dead grown up hen which was half eaten. Still no signs of entry.

Tuesday evening I found the “grave” of the chicks opened and the dead chicks were gone!!!!

The other chicks were fine.

The last nights nothing strange has happened.

I’m wondering which animal would do this?? It can’t be the rats as they would not attack a healthy grown up chicken and they would also not dig up dead chicks.

I ordered a wild cam to monitor the coop because as long as I don’t know what it is, I can’t take any measures.

But if there is a mink, would I still have rats?? Wouldn't the mink hunt the rats?

Yes the mink would kill all the rats. Just wondering if maybe they took over. The thing that seems to have changed is you had rats and no chickens died? And now things have changed and you are loosing chickens. If nothing else can get it BUT rats, the rats are doing the killing or something is getting in through the rat holes. Mad me think of the mink.
You mention no raccoons in the area. What other predators do you have?

I still saw a rat a couple of days ago. Maybe somehing else comes throug the rat holes. Yesterday I closed them all with pieces of fence and heavy stones. Hope it stays quiet.
