I use the flat side of 2x4's because I read I should. I think tree branches are fine but they should be pretty fat. Chicken's toes just don't curl around the way other birds' do, I think they need a wider roost to be comfortable. Also helps them keep their toes warm with their body if it is really cold. I've read about larger birds, esp. roos, who actually prefer a shelf. Actually, one of my Orps sleeps on a shelf.
