I have always raised meat birds. This is my first foray into layers.
I have 15 Buff Orpingtons about 7 weeks old, and 3 ISA Browns about 9-10 weeks old. Not sure how old they were when I got them as little chicks, but I've had them for 9 weeks.
One of the ISA Browns has dug herself a little hole and keeps wiggling down into it. When I pet her, she gets squatty. I thought she was sick so I got her out of her little hole and she walked around fine. She was not dust bathing.
Is it possible she is getting ready to lay? She is fully feathered but comb is yellow. Just seems really young.
Also - she was in a pen with other young chicks but I recently moved the ISAs into a smaller pen with an elderly banty hen that I got from my mom a few weeks ago. The banty still lays every couple days. Is she maybe copying the older hen?
