Linseed oil is derived from flax seed and is nowhere near varnish, although both are used to protect wood. Mineral oil on the other hand is a fractured petroleum product that is derived from crude oil, aka. dead dinosaurs pumped out of the ground by companies like British Petroleum. Vaseline is also a by product of the oil business because the jelly naturally accumulates on pumping equipment like pump rods and pistons.
