Lulu, our lame runt/sometimes house chicken is my favorite. She makes us laugh every day. She is my avatar. If she hears the door to the greenhouse, she scoots as fast as she can because she knows thats where we keep the corn. If we are working in the yard, she comes to supervise and chirps at us to dig her more worms. She talks to me all the time and is very gentle. She can delicately take something from you without even touching your fingers with her beak. If she is in to lay her egg, she listens for the rustle of plastic bags because she knows that means bread or peanuts. She is very independent and patrols the whole yard on her own since she isn't penned with the other girls because they pick on her. I love her to death - she is such a sweetie!
Everyone here in the house has 3 girls in particular out of all of our birds that have worked their way so firmly into our hearts, and into our lives that we would be devastated if we lost any of them. The first is our little Bantam Barred Cochin hen Petunia. Petunia, or Pooty as she is now fondly called, likes to go skating with the kids, go for wagon rides, bike riding, riding on the scooter, and I intend to see if she likes car rides at some point (I have a diaper for her if she does want to go for a car ride). Pooty is just the most wonderful bird ever. She doesn't scoot away from us if we reach out to touch her, and she will coo and talk to us if we talk to her. I adore her. Here is a pic of my Pooty with my mother. My mom is still a bit wary around most chickens, but she just scoops Pooty right up and hugs and kisses her like she does her kitties. And Pooty doesn't peck at people. In fact, she eats up all the attention:
My other two faves are my two Amber Sexlink hens. I picked them out of the mixed bin at TSC and lucked out and got all 3 pullets. I sold the nippy one, but kept my two princesses. These girls are just wonderful. They are smart and they know we keep the good food inside the "Big coop", so on almost a daily basis they invite themselves into the house, and into the kitchen to beg off either me, or grandma, and once they have gotten their fill, they march right back out. They taught all the other standards how to come in the house too.
Nothing like having a roo and 9 hens standing under your feet demanding a treat, in the kitchen! SOOOOOOOO glad I have a floor steam cleaner!!!!! Here are the girls:
This is Poachy:
And here is Omelet, the ring leader with my younger daughter, lol:
