what is pressed wood made of?

well we will only be here a year. oh man We already bought like 15 sheets last yr. We cant return it because we already got part of the wall dont. Well we wont be here for long. We are going to convert it into a tool shed before my mom moves next yr

Is it the kind that is made of sawdust (particle board) or the kind made of little pieces of wood (chip board I think it is called)? I am pretty sure chip board is supposed to be at least a little sturdier than particle board.

yeah its the one with chips in it.. I am hoping to get a good year out of it then convert it into a tool shed.

It's not uncommon to have particle board under vinyl/linoleum flooring. However, that particle board is normally over another layer of plywood/planks. In other words, the particle board is not a structural member, it's there to level out the floor and give a nice smooth surface for gluing the vinyl/linoleum to, which it does quite well.

Again, particle board is not meant to be a structural product. If you want to make it stronger and water resistant, laminate it. (formica) That's what most of your kitchen counter tops are made of. Particle board underneath a formica laminate.

If you have O.S.B./Chip board you'll be fine, just make sure to put 3 good thick coats of exterior paint on it. Oil based paint (alkyd) would be best, but if you cant deal with that a high quality latex will do.

I have built ramps out of the chiped would one and I can get some good hight. I am 6'1" I weigh about 170 and it can hold up pretty well with my weight plus the bikes weight. I think it should hold up pretty well. I cant break it like particle board. I also found the chipped wood one in the house building area with the 2x4's

If you're using OSB and you only care that it lasts a year, you'll be fine. I wouldn't even waste money on paint. I live in Michigan, so we get a good amount of hot, cold, rain, and snow. I have an a sheet of OSB that's been outside as a pistol target for a year and a half- with no paint. It's fine. Not even soft yet. Just don't plan on it lasting TOO long.

sometimes it comes treated. if it is treated, it will last much longer than a year. if it's exposed, just put a good thick layer of paint on it.

thanks. It said treated on the side when we bought it. I will slap some paint on it after its built. put a bunch of nails in it and add some concrete

Pressed wood is sawdust with a ton of glue. Called particle board and some places call it MDF. Medium density fiber board. Which is not correct because the original Real MDF is made of pressed paper. [You find it in really old houses as wall covering as we now use sheet rock.] It will fall apart in the slightest damp. Then theres oriented strand board OSB that is made of pressed shavings from a lumber mill planner, also with a lot of glue. I live in Oregon western [a lot of rain] and have used OSB as outside walls on my potting shed. It will degrade with time and also degrades badly with contact to wet soil. But I have used it up on cement blocks with good sucess. It works as well as exterior plywood here. I worked at a lumber mill where I lost my right hand in a planner. My hand is in a sheet of OSB somewhere. The hopper was full and worth $2800. So knowing the mill owners they did not dump it as required by law but sold it. So my hand is in someones' wall somewhere. And by the way work comp really stinks. I would use stonger words but can't here.
Sometimes OSB is cheaper than exterior plywood sometimes not. Check around.
