What is reserve Best?

a black cochin pullet would be against all black cochin pullets for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.

a black cochin rooster would be against all black cochin roosters for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.

black cockeral against all black cockerals.
black hen against all Black hens.

I think you get the idea. They get a 1st place winner for each sex/age category per color.

There can be 4 1st place winners per color, hen, rooster, pullet, cockeral.

Out of each color, they choose one to be best of variety (best of the blacks, best of whites, best of partridge and so on) and one of each color will be reserve of variety.

Now you have a BV Black vs BV white vs BV partridge all competing for the best of the breed.

Hope you can follow all this. Now, sometimes there is no one to go up against so they will just judge you for the breed category. If you are the only one of the breed there, you automatically get BB.

Best of Breed will mean the entire breed regardless of sex, age, or color.

Best of Variety goes by color regardless of sex or age.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd goes by color and sex and age.

Now, in your case, I am assuming pekin ducks are pekin ducks, one color, one variety. Therefore there is no competition for variety, you are automatically up for breed awards. You say you got #1 RB. That says out of all the pekin duck pullets there, you got 1st place.

Out of ALL the pekin ducks that were in the show, you got RB or second place. That is pretty good depending on how many pekin ducks were there altogether, basically there was only one there that was better than yours.

LOL, now my head is spinning.

Thank you chickenlady! I do follow it now.
I thought maybe I knew, but wanted to be sure.

My ducks got 1st, 2nd and 3rd that day. If the BB duck had not been there, looks like we would have gotten it. There were 3 other ducks there on Saturday.
