What is SLW, GLW, etc??

Don't feel bad, I was confused at first too.

Now here's a question--what's the difference between Red Stars, Golden Buffs, Golden Comets, Red Sex Links? I was trying to explain to my neighbor that they're all the same breed but since I refer to mine as Red Stars and she refers to hers as Golden Buffs, she's not convinced.

None of these are not breeds; they are hybrids. Hatcheries will cross two breeds to get chicks that are a different color for each sex, to make them easy to sex without vent sexing, and possibly to increase egg production, as these hybrids usually lay well. The various names are different hatcheries' names or brands for their crosses.

I don't know exactly which two breeds are used for any of the above crosses. I do know that often they use a barred rock and rhode island red cross. All the above could be this cross, or another, I just don't know.

Black Sex-links are created by crossing a RIR rooster over a BR hen.

A few combinations to make the Red Sex-links are RIR over a RIW, RIR over a Delaware, or a RIR over a White Rock (silver factor).

Ah, good old BYC. I figured some folks would chime in who know more about sex links than I do. Must remember, it's all on Feathersite....

Honestly, I wish they were just written out, it takes me forever to try to figure it out! This chicken education is alot work, and I thought I was done with schoolin' !

Don't forget BO's! (Buff Orpingtons)

When we first got on the forums a few months ago, I couldn't make a thing out of any of the chicken abbreviations, either! I'm still getting the hang of it! I'm sure we'll both get them all eventually!
