Butler Bobwhites are supposedly pretty big? [IMG]

or jumbo coturnix (if you can find someone that breeds them as big as they were meant to be *an lb*). I think my 12 oz hen is huge, so I can only imagine what a lber looks like! LOL!

Quote:That's probably how they were started out is by breeding the largest of the pharoahs to the largest of the pharoahs until they made a distinct larger sized coturnix. Jumbos lay exceptionably bigger eggs than the pharoah coturnix, and have a big more breast meat [IMG].

Most breeders don't selectively breed their coturnix, or their jumbos, so that causes various sizes of jumbos, from small jumbos that barely look any different from a normal pharoah coturnix to the ones that are completley bigger than the pharoahs even at hatching. I think if you want to find a breeder that only breeds for pretty good sized jumbos try to find someone who selectively breeds for larger birds. I plan to but right now I have a mixture of both normal sized coturnix and jumbos....my goals is to breed every color to jumbo size. [IMG] I like those huge eggs that are almost banty sized too much not to LOL

NOOOOOOO [IMG] I learned from the head poultry prof. down at Texas A&M that in order to get larger birds you dont always use the biggest. You want to look for things like length and width of breast.....and overall body. You want a good plump bird but doesn't always mean the biggest of the group.
