what is the best brown egg layer ??

Aussies for sure, I have two and they are consistent layers with large brown eggs. One of mine went broody, but I was able to dissuade her since I did not want chicks. Both are gentle and love to have their backs rubbed. It is deep winter here, highs of 30 or so, lows in single digits, they are still laying (I do have heat/light in the hen house).

If you are looking for really dark egg layers, definitely go with Black Copper Marans.
Here is a pic of some of my BCM eggs next to an Americana egg...

At what age did they start laying ? [ Nothing implied , just curious about the breed and variety ]

Also , do black or whites orps generally perform on par with the buffs ?

Steve, they started laying at 6 months. Not sure how other varieties of Orpingtons compare to buffs.

I got them from a local breeder. They lay large eggs of a medium brown shade. If you want really dark eggs go with black copper marans. I have those also.
