what is the best chick as a pet?

I think it also matters where you get your birds from. Obviously some birds will be nicer than others, in any breed. The more inbreeding there is, I suspect the worse the temperment would be (in people too! Lol). I have Cochins from 3 different places and mine are all wonderful. Course some are friendlier than others. My BO's, none are super friendly, though they are definitely calm. They are Bantam too. Another breed I like are Marans. I have a big ole gentle Silver Cuckoo Marans roo that is so good to his ladies, and so gentle with people, I just love him. I have more Marans chicks hatching now that I am hoping will be equally as sweet as he is. But every Marans I've met has been calm and gentle, so I know that despite the size, they are a good, calm bird. You'll probably never get any two people to fully agree on what breed is the best, because everyone has their own preferences and have had their own experiences. The only breed that I think I have to say I don't really care for are Black Sexlinks. I don't care for their temperment. And I didn't like Sebrights as much as I thought I would. I like them, they just aren't my favorite.

You mentioned Marans- where did you get yours? I have some on the way from Meyers. I hope they are friendly!

Mine all came from private breeders, not hatchery stock. The rooster I have now I got from another BYC'er who got the eggs from a Marans breeder, and when I traded her some birds last year, I chose the pretty little white bird with the soft barring, pink legs, and blue eyes. He grew up into the most handsome bird I've ever seen. His legs stayed pink, but his eyes changed to a pumpkin color. Here is a pic of him:

The ones hatching right now I got from Little_Grey_Bantam here on BYC. Her birds come from Wade Jean lines and Amish lines. She said hers have wonderful temperments and I am hoping these chicks will have it too. I have 7 Marans eggs in there and so far 2 have hatched. I have 5 FBCM, and 2 Cuckoo. Can't tell in the chaos who is hatching from what. I'll have to wait til they grow a bit I guess. I have Speckled Sussex, Welsummer/Sussex crosses, mixed Bantams, and my Marans in there, and the Sussex hatched first and are all over the place, so I'm not even going to try to sort out who is who til everyone is done hatching and I can start moving them to the brooder!

So far, my seramas are one of the friendliest breeds I have. I've had quite a few super friendly polish hens, and bantam salmon faverolles have always been a safe bet in my experience. We have 3 little ones right now, and they follow us every where. DH & I were outside working the other night, and he was sitting at the table trying to figure something out. My salmon fav pullet would not leave him alone. He finally picked her up and sat her on the table with him. She was happy with that!

BUFF ORPINGTONS ROCK......my buffs are soooooo loving. They always run to me when I get home from work when my husband has them out in the yard...love them!!
