We are going to start selling eggs but we need some chickens to be really trustworthy layers.

Leghorns and austrolorps wold have to be at the top of the list as far as egg production goes. I believe an Austrolorp holds the worlds record for egg laying..364 eggs in 365 days!

Brown or white?
Leghorns and the newer hybrids based on that genetics are the best white layers but there are other good ones, Minorca, Ancona, Jaerhon.
RIR's and Australorps are among the best brown layers but again, there are hybrids that may be better.
Super layers don't lay as well after the first 18 months of lay.

Leghorns are better layers in my opinion, my ba, were lackluster layers.... but they were just hatchery birds.

And I strongly agree, the breeds that are egg laying machines, lay hard the first year, a little less the second year, and then decline in egg production quickly, and in my experience, they don't live very long after that.

And they are not good to eat- very light weight, but they can really lay.
