I’m a new backyard chicken owner we are in the process of building a coop. I wanted to know what kinds of feeders and watering is good for 4 chickens.
Thanks
Hello Ljorgie, . So glad you could join us. There are SO many different design feed and water options it can be a little overwhelming for sure. I have 9 chickens and use a couple of the 7 lb plastic feeders(like you would get at TSC or wherever) but have customized a 5 gallon bucket shell to go over the top so the chickens can't sling/spill the food all over the place. For waterers I use a 5 qt. plastic waterer(ACV in that one) and a 5 gallon bucket with horizontal poultry nipples, I love that one because it's sealed and the chickens can't poop or manage to get all sorts of other unsavory stuff in the water. You can look around on here and find all kinds of neat ideas that folks have engineered. Anyhoo, best of luck with your new coop. And hope you find feed/water design solutions that work just right for you!
Hello again, Laura!
This is what I use for waterer and feeder. Like @TomZilla43, I'm a big fan of the horizontal nipple waterers. I dump, clean and refill my bucket twice a week and that easily keeps up with my 26 chickens.
I ferment my feed so the trough works great for that. It also allows a lot of chickens to eat at once without much squabbling.
