I know that a lot of the sex links and hybrids lay well but I am wanting to find something a little different than everyone else has. Please share with me your back yard crosses!

Best looking is in the eyes of the beholder, so hard to say. Best laying are the hybrids marketed as high output layers.

define good layer. Number of eggs/year? Number of years laying well? Those are very different things.

what are you looking to do? Eggs for personal use or to sell? Breeding a new hybrid?

The offspring of any decent laying hens that I crossed with a Swedish Flower Hen rooster all laid better than the parents did.

Eggs for eating usage, over 250 is what i would consider a high layer and if it laid that good i would definitely breed them again. As far as the looks go it could always be a personal opinion but it always makes the flock nicer and easier on the eyes with some good looking hens. do you have any that you prefer or have found that might not be in the hatcheries? just looking for some that are different than what everyone else has

I bought 3 hens that look like this, they where in the color cuckoo and had a big crest on there head. very pretty, 2 of them laid olive green eggs and the other one laid brown egg. I was told they where a mix of cream legbar and cuckoo Maran :)

awesome thank you for the idea!

I also made this cross, there mom was a red easter egger hen, and there dad was a silver silkie rooster. 3 eggs hatched and one of them was a silver rooster and the other 2 are these 2 beautiful sisters.
I still own them and they are great egg layers, there eggs are green and not much smaller then easter egger eggs, the white one has gone broody once and was a great mother :love

My Cream Legbar hen covered by a Black Copper Marans roo produced beautiful black hens with a crest on their heads and they laid the loveliest sage green eggs. Gentle birds, pretty smart for chickens but was not expecting more than about 180 to 200 eggs per year.
