What is the best thing you gleaned from BYC?

The "Emergency" section has undoubtedly saved chicken lives at our place! This is the ONLY "chat site" (my friends call it "Chicken Chat") I utilize. I love that it's moderated to be family-friendly. In fact, my DD turned me on to this site!

Hi! Once upon a time, I left a gate I was about to hang leaning while I went back for more screws. Gate fell on nosey Silkie hen and squashed her near-flat. I couldn't find anything wrong with her but a shattered leg (imagine a bunch of broken spaghetti in a sock). I had read previously the proper splinting technique and the proper aspirin dosage for her pain and inflamation. I didn't even need to ask for help, because someone had already been there. After it was calm, I searched for the thread and *checked my facts*. She lived inside with her splinted leg for 6 wks and healed without even a limp.
I am 'persona non grata', so it is my nature to *look and read* and not ask for help. If I had asked and wated for a response, the bird would have died of old age WITH a still-broke leg

I've gotten lots of hand-holding and help with incubation and hatching here.
Wow, and so much appreciated information about genetics.
Chicken genetics are fabulously complicated and our members that actually have a grasp on the genetics end are under-appreciated.
Other stuff, too, that is un-chicken-related! I learned to make cold-process goat milk soap from just reading what was posted in 'Hobbies thread' --- using lye and all!
So much amazing knowledge shared.

2.) When introducing new chickens to existing flock - - - make sure you add hiding spots and extra waterers and feeders.

Allow me to start my story with a book about "How to raise chickens" Author not needed

I read and read and read some more I thought Ok I can do this so I went and talked to the wife about it, she agreed that we should get some chickens about 6-8 not to many and see if we can raise them up.
So I went to the Internet looking for any info I could find about raising chickens this one site kept popping up on everything I was looking for I kept seeing BackYard Chickens.com so I clicked on the link which brought to the min page I started looking at the coops and checked out the forum read all about the different breeds and I lurked around for awhile I kept finding myself comeing back every day in the morning before work in the afternoon at lunch when I got home before I went to bed Then I thought well since I am here reading everything I can about chickens (which is far more then the book ever taught me) from real owners people just like me I figured it was time to make a profile and become a member of the BYC and in the last few months I have read and read and read, post some things even got yelled at one time. Now what I have learned from BYC is

1. People learn so much more from real owners then they ever could from a book
2. The people in this Forum are greatest
3. The information never stops comeing
4. The Member's look out for each other
5. THE BYC IS VERY ADDICTIVE and so are the chickens
6. We are all enablers to the CHICKEN JUNKIES
7. People Have such great coops and runs
8. The DIY ideas are never ending
9. it doesn't matter where you are from, who you know, what you look like, or how much money your worth or not worth if you have chickens and or a love for chickens you belong here on th BYC forum
10. We all share the same thing the love for this forum and the people on it as well as Nifty and our Chickens

This is what I have learned in the past 2-3 months I have been on the BYC Forum And I would liek to thank each and everyone of you for greeting me and others like me and you with open arms, hearts, and minds.
I hope that we can keep going in the years to come.

Thank you all for teaching me all that I need to learn but a realy big thanks goes out to NIFTY and the Mods for keeping the BYC running so all of us chicken people have a place to go and be with other chicken people.
